Jonah's Surgery

Hello, This is Jonah, I wanted to share an experience that has changed my life. Mom and Dad documented my journey and took photographs so I could share them with you.

As you may know, I have been traveling with Mom and Dad for a few years now. I have been to Las Vegas, Missouri, Kentucky, North Carolina and other states in-between. I love to travel, but it started taking it's toll on me. As you can see in the photo, I've had some issues with my right ear causing hearing loss.

I also sustained an injury while swinging from the ceiling fan to the back of a chair. I misjudged the distance and landed on the corner of the turtle tank. I scared my poor turtle, Scully when I landed, poor little thing pulled her head into her shell and wouldn't come out for hours.

Mom and Dad sat down with me and explained that I needed reconstructive surgery. Dad said that this type of surgery is a serious matter, but I would be in good hands. I was very sad, I didn't want to have surgery, but I also knew that I couldn't travel anymore with my broken leg.

Here is a photo of me in Pre-op, Mom and Dad tried to comfort me, but I was very nervous about how I would look after the surgery.

After contemplating my new looks, I started to get really scared, I wondered if my friends and family would recognize me after the reconstructive surgery. Mom and Dad assured me they would still know me, but I just wasn't sure.

I felt so much better when Mahala came and sat with me. I asked her if I was going to die, and she said she didn't think so, but, if I did leave this world, there is a beautiful place in the next life where we get to live with Jesus. She said it is called Heaven and everyone is nice and I will be able to play in the jungle and eat as many bananas as my tummy could handle. It sounds like a wonderful place, but I didn't want to leave my family and friends here. Mahala said she had faith in my crafty doctor and she knew in her heart I would be fine.

It was a long, difficult surgery. I could tell too, it felt like someone knocked the stuffings out of me.

Here comes the life changing event......Mom said there were some complications during surgery and I had to have CPR. I'm guessing this was when I saw Heaven..... Mahala was right, it was so lovely, the jungle was green and lush and there were many other sock monkeys there. They kept motioning for me to go join them and as tempting as it was, I wasn't ready. The next thing I remember was waking up in recovery.

Mom said between the surgery and recovery I was out of commission for a couple of days. Looking at this photo, I would say she wasn't kidding. Boy I almost look like a sock mummy.

When I did wake up, I couldn't see anything, but I could hear again. Mahala was with me, she was sweet and sang songs to me. I asked her how I looked, but she told me I had too many bandages and she couldn't see my face.

Well, I'm almost healed now and I feel pretty good. I want to wait a little longer before I post a picture of me. But I will post one soon.

This sweet little guy is Zackry, he is the grandson of one of my high school buddies. I absolutely love this picture of Zackry in his sock monkey outfit and toting his sock monkey blanket and sock monkey with him in the wagon. His parents did a great job getting him all dressed up for this photo. Don't you just want to kiss those sweet chubby cheeks? Thank you Dave for letting me share this picture.

Making and Canning Cucumber Relish

My mom introduced me to cucumber relish many years ago. Nothing beats FRESH relish on a natural casing wiener, mmmmm. Unfortunately, mom and I never had the opportunity to make the relish together before she died. However, she had given me the recipe, so I now make this relish annually.

Along with the recipe card, mom also gave me her old meat grinder, which I use to grind up the veggies. I first wash the cucumbers since they are left un-peeled, I then scrape the outer layer of the carrots and lightly rinse the remaining carrot. I then remove the outer layer of the onion. I always double or triple the recipe. So next the grinding begins.

After the veggies are coarsely ground, I put them all in a large sauce pan and add one tablespoon of salt (more if doubling recipe) and let the mixture set for 3 hours.

After sitting for 3 hours, rinse the mixture well.

While the veggies are draining, using the same sauce pan, mix together the sugar, vinegar, celery seed and mustard seed. Bring these items to a boil and stir until sugar has completely dissolved.

Add the veggies to the vinegar/sugar mixture and bring to a boil again, while stirring often.

Once mixture has reached the boiling point, turn off the burner, and start putting the mixture in sterilized canning jars.

Using a small ladle or funnel, fill each jar leaving approximately 1/2 inch of space at the top.

Add lids and let cool. As the mixture cools the top of the jars will seal. There is no need to boil the finished product in a canning bath. I have used this process for years and have never had a seal break. Make sure to refrigerate after opening.

Blankets and Burp Clothes

My daughter called me and said the new daycare requires baby Damien's name on all of his personal items. She asked if I would make some burp clothes, she doesn't care for the thin clothes available in stores. I make burp clothes from a cotton weave diaper folded in half, and flannel or a cotton/knit blend backing which provides extra absorbency.

Along with the burp clothes I decided a couple of blankets were in order. I know Damien LOVES Mickey Mouse, he won't let anyone take his Mickey away from him, so I thought a Mickey blanket would be nice too.

Monkey Quilt

Some projects just don't want to come together as planned. In this case, I ran into many little issues from running out of thread to measuring incorrectly. However, I finally finished it this morning. I hope JR likes his new monkey quilt.

Pink Memo Board

While in North Carolina in February, I made some wonderful new friends, Zac, Kat, Janna and JR. They are a wonderful young family and extremely humorous. Zac and Kat kept Greg and I laughing most of an evening. While we were enjoying each others company, their darling daughter Janna entertained herself and two babies in the adjoining room. I was so impressed with Janna, she was so polite and well behaved, what a darling little girl and kudos to Zac and Kat for doing a wonderful job parenting her. After I returned to Nebraska, Kat asked if I would make a memo board for Janna, the only requirement was the board needed to be shades of pink with white. This is what I came up with, I really hope she likes it.

Sock Monkey for Baby

I have been making sock monkeys for over a year now, I'm guessing that I've made close to 100 monkeys for friends, family and have sold some too. Jonah was my first sock monkey and is by far my favorite, he has a sweet personality and travels well. Mahala took the longest to make, I lost track of how many hours I put into her, but she now sits proudly in our living room. My latest monkey is actually very simple, back to the basics, no tattoo or wild hair. Just a simple, lovable sock monkey. This little guy was made for a new born baby, so for safety he does not have the standard button eyes, his eyes are embroidered.

Husker and Super Sock Monkey!

Super Monkey will swing from the highest trees, tromp through the muddiest swampland, swim across mighty oceans, crawl through the most barren deserts to find the finest bananas in the world. Super Monkey will not rest until he can feed all homeless sock monkeys on the planet.

Super Sock Monkey has a brother, Husker Monkey. Husker Monkey is one of the athletic trainers at UNL. His claim to fame is being Ndamukong Suh's trainer, mentor and best friend. Husker Monkey (or HM to his friends) is one hell-of-a chimp, he's loved by many at UNL and is sure to become a professional trainer with the NFL in the near future.

Guardian Sock Monkey

As many of you know, last June we visited our daughter in North Carolina. We were thrilled to find out we were going to be grandparents. Jonah was especially tickled when he got to listen for the baby.

We had the opportunity to go back last month to meet our grandson for the first time. Jonah loves flying, here he is showing off his airline ticket.

Wouldn't you know that Jonah became the "over protective" uncle. Poor Baby D, couldn't even sneeze without Jonah being right there to make sure he was okay. Here are a few pictures of Jonah with Baby D.

Of course Jonah knew he couldn't stay in North Carolina and continue to watch over Baby D, so he left one of his monkey friends to continue protecting Baby D. In this photo, the rookie monkey is in training, Jonah was watching his every move to make sure he was qualified for the important job of "guardian monkey".

The following photo was taken just before we left. I think Jonah was feeling very comfortable with his selection of Baby D's guardian monkey. We as grandparents also feel confident that the rookie will be a pro in no time at all.

Now we just have to wait for Baby D. to give his guardian monkey a name.

Frog baby quilts

Just finished two baby quilts, these are smaller quilts to fit into a Pack N Play. Because they are only 24" x 24" a toddler can carry the quilt around without tripping over it. I love how easy the backing is, I measure a 28" x 28" square and miter the corners, it then fits perfectly behind the front and batting. Just tuck in the corners and edges and sew all three layers together.

Mahala, Queen of the Sock Monkeys

Doll crib makeover part 1

I recently pulled the doll crib I used as a child out of storage. I gave it a good washing, fixed the bed frame and decided it need a bit more. My plan is to totally disassemble the crib in the spring, sand it down and repaint it. But until it's warmer outside, I will just focus on the things I can do now. I started with a new mattress, the old one was literally taped together. I guess that is to be expected when it went through 5 daughters and 12 grand-daughters (assuming the sons/grand-sons didn't play with it). I took the old plastic inflatable mattress, which hasn't held air for decades, and made a case out of natural cotton batting for it to slide into. Then was the mattress cover which I made out of a poly-cotton fabric. Here is the first picture I took. Jasper is the model in the photo.

The pillow that is in the crib was made by my mom many years ago. Now it just needed a pillow case along with a crib sheet.

I still felt like it was missing something, so I made a small quilt.

After digging out a few old Cabbage Patch dolls, I realized the little boy, Charlie Mark, was in desperate need of some clothing, I'm guessing he's been a little chilly in the Nebraska winter.

First, I made him a diaper......

I'm almost embarrassed, one of my sisters mentioned a while back that I was starting to become more and more like my mom. I said "naa", she said, "When the day comes you start making doll clothes...." I told her that wouldn't happen.....(cough, cough...) well, guess I was wrong.

In this photo the clothes on the girl doll were crochet by my mom about 25 years ago, they were actually made for my newborn daughter, but she was already wearing 3mo old clothes when she was born, so I only squeezed her into this outfit once for a photo.

Baby Bedding and Bath

The babies nursery decor is going to be monkeys, so here are the items I have made so far.....

The center of this quilt has an embroidered monkey which was made using my new Brother embroidery machine. The back of the quilt is flannel to help keep the baby warm.

This after bath wrap is made with terry cloth and flannel. There are built in legs and two pockets so mom can carry lotion or a comb. The matching hat will keep babies head warm on cold days.

My daughter and son-in-law are into gaming. When we found out they were going to have a baby boy, I thought a gaming chair for a toddler was in order. I purchased a used car seat, cleaned it, removed the old fabric and recovered it using vinyl. I then made a game controller that consisted of buttons, snaps, a zipper, shoe string, buckle and velcro.

[Both monkeys] Hi, we're Drew and Anna's sock monkeys, although they don't know that yet. Their daddy will be picking us up in a few days and taking us home with him, then we'll get to meet Drew and Anna for the first time, we are so excited.

[Drew's monkey] Drew likes to hunt, fish and boy stuff like that, so I have a camo vest to wear when we go out and do "guy" things together. I already know Drew is going to be my favorite guy, so I got a tattoo on my arm that says "Drew", I also liked it because my cousin who is on the Kia commercials has a tattoo on his arm that says "mom".

[Anna's monkey] Anna is an adorable little girl, I've seen pictures of her, she has the most beautiful smile and sparkly eyes. Anna likes pink and purple so I asked my human mom to make me some purple pajamas. They are nice and warm, which is good during our cold winters. I'm hoping Anna has a pajama party with her friends and I can show off my pretty jammies.....although my jammies will never be as pretty as Anna, she is so darn cute! Oh, I almost forgot, I have a tattoo that says "Anna" over my heart because I know I'm going to love her!

Santa Sock Monkey

With it being the Sunday before Christmas, the holiday cheer is filling our house. The sock monkeys made banana cookies for Santa Monkey so they'll be ready to set out later this week. We had a lot of fun making the cookies, we laughed, sang and danced in the kitchen in between baking batches of cookies. I have never seen so many bananas in my life! I think the sock monkeys ate more than they baked, it's kind of like humans who eat more chocolate chips then they put into their cookies. We got the job done though, and the kitchen is all cleaned up and dinner is in the oven.

Jonah thought it was a good time for Baby monkey to visit Santa for the first time. So, when Dad, Paul and Bryan went shopping, Jonah said he would go with them to help. Soon after, I heard Joshua and Baby laughing and dancing around as they saw Santa Monkey appear in our living room. Joshua sat on Santa Monkeys lap first and then he talked Baby monkey to crawl into Santa's lap. I was very surprised, Baby didn't cry at all, he did very well for his very first Santa Monkey visit. Santa Monkey asked what the boys wanted for Christmas. He then did an amazing thing, he told the boys the story of baby Jesus, and how Mary and Joseph traveled afar, looking for a place to rest and for Mary to give birth. He explained how baby Jesus is the Son of God, our Heavenly Father and is our Savior. When Joshua asked why we give presents, Santa Monkey told him of the three wise men and how they traveled to meet baby Jesus and gave Him precious gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Santa Monkey did a wonderful job with the boys, I thanked him for stopping by and telling Joshua and Baby the Christmas Story.

For this card, I made home made seed paper with a mixture of spring flower seeds. The card can be disassembled and placed in a sunny location. in prepared soil, with a fine layer of soil placed on top of the paper. After it is watered lightly on a daily basis, you will have a beautiful spring flower garden.

Mental-pause

Today is a "mental-pause" day. It's not just the sweaty, bloated, tired feeling that I have most days. Today my brain hurts, my emotions are on a roller coaster and I feel inadequate. When it comes to my job, I often feel like I'm being judged. I don't think it's due to my lack of job skills, its due to my lack of a healthy body. I have a number of health issues and have taken sick days here and there. I can't help that I have such severe endometriosis that I've had surgery 4 time because of it. I cannot control what damage the endometriosis has left inside of me causing further health issues. I also have a hard time breathing around many chemicals, perfumes, candles...etc... These items not only make my chest feel heavy, I get a sore throat and migraine headaches. This is a problem when you work in a middle school. Staff and students like to wear perfume/cologne, which in small doses aren't too bad. But there are always the kids who come out of PE and decide to douse themselves in some type of sweet flowery scent, or a masculine spice scent, these can overpower the senses of those standing near-by causing a head to pound, itchy, burning eyes, sore throat, and breathing problems. So why are these things allowed in a public building? You can't smoke in a public building because of health concerns, why should a person be able to cause another person to become ill because they want to smell a certain way. It's not right, and it's not fair to those of us who have to suffer through it. I believe I would miss less work if the air I was breathing was pure, clean air. But that is so far from the case here. I have put my complaints in writing and sent them to the administration, it was better for a while, but it was short lived. I don't want to continue complaining to administration in fear that I'll become a thorn in the side, yet I don't want to feel like crap everyday. I think that's why my emotions are on a roller coaster today. I opened my office door to a staff member and caught a huge wiff of something unpleasant to my sinuses. I now don't feel well and I'm also teary eyed which is partly allergies and partly me wanting to cry just because I feel like no matter how many times I ask nicely, there won't be a permanent solution and I'll continue to feel sick at work. Today is one of those days when I would love to quit my job only because of the physical atmosphere. But I need the income. What is a person to do? I want to go complain again, but it would be the third time in a month. I can't stand feeling this way, but I can't continue taking sick leave.....What to do, what to do?

On another note, if you don't hear from me for a while, it's because my embroidery machine is scheduled to arrive today and I have a feeling I'll be on a large learning curve. Once I get it figured out and something made, I'll be sure to post it.

Joshua (Jonah's little brother) has discovered Nebraska football and is really excited whenever game day rolls around. So he and I sat in my craft room and made him a pair of pants and a do-rag. Personally, I think he looks rather cool.

Gone Fishin'

Jonah has been asking me for weeks if he can go fishing with us. After some discussion, DH and I decided it was time to go to Bass Pro Shop and purchase some fishing gear for him. We found a nice rod and reel for Jonah and then DH and I each purchased a new rod and reel. I must admit, I do like my new gear, but I still can't let go of my old 1985 Zebco 33 Spincast, I really love that rod and reel.
Well, we packed up the car with the gear, tackle, bait, lawn chairs and bug spray and headed east. When we got to the lake, I showed Jonah how to properly tie a jig (hook) onto his line. Luckily sock monkeys don't bleed because he hooked himself a few times, but he was a real trooper and didn't whine or complain. We talked about how much weight to use and what types of bobbers we have. Jonah decided he wanted to fish without a bobber at first, which worked fine until it got dark out. Then he used one of our new light up bobbers. DH taught Jonah how to cast, I was going to but he was kind of tired of my instructions and wanted some "dad" time. So, I left the two guys alone and started to drown my own worms. We stayed at the lake for a few hours, we all got a few bites, but didn't hook anything. Well, actually DH hooked something large, so large it literally took the bait and the hook. We packed up and headed for home around 9:30, this is when we noticed Jonah couldn't stay awake anymore.

More Shirts for DH

Here are a couple more shirts I made for DH (Dear Hubby), these also have been worn and washed a few times so aren't looking as nice as they were right after I made them. It's amazing how quickly fabric starts to fade these days, even with careful washing in cool water and Clorox 2 for colors, but they still seem to fade. If anyone has a solution to make my colors look brighter, please let me know. Dang, that almost sounded like a commercial!

DH does film and video work, he has had the opportunity to work on a few "Hollywood" films so I thought this would be a fun material to work with. It is Robert Kaufman's Movie Director fabric.

Catching up

Well, autumn is in the air along with a chill in the early morning and late evenings which is perfectly fine with me. I'm so tired of hot flashes, it doesn't help that I'm 50lbs overweight, but I'll save that for another blog entry. Dear Hubby (DH) and I have been trying to go fishing once a week for the past month or so, I've enjoyed sitting by the water and listening to God's little critters. I invited a friend of mine to go fishing with us, he passed, but did have a funny idea. He suggested the next time we pull the camper out to the lake, I spend some time fishing and follow it up by sewing next to the campfire, that way I'll get to do many of my favorite things in the same day. Hmmm....now, how to lug along a sewing machine and set it up next to the campfire....LOL...Great suggestion Larry (wink wink)
I'm still sewing, but I haven't done a very good job of taking pictures and posting on the blog. I'll attempt to catch up a little today.

Anna's Monkey

Well, it's been quite sometime since I've been on here, I'm still alive and kicking, just low on motivation. I know excuses, excuses.... Actually, we have been out camping a few times, I've finally gone to a Nebraska Husker football game, been out fishing a few times and have been sewing. So I guess I haven't been totally unmotivated. My darling daughter, Katie, is starting to really show off her baby belly, she is so darn cute, just wish she was close by so I could talk to my little grandson***sigh*** but all is well, mamma and baby are coming along just fine. I've started making clothes for baby Damien, but until his mommy gets to see them, I'm not going to post them on my blog. I've only gotten two finished, but have lots of ideas bouncing around in my head.
I caught up with an old friend on Facebook a few months ago, he lives about 50 miles from here, so my dear hubby and I met up with him and met his two adorable kids. We spent a fun filled day at the SAC Air and Space Museum, it was a nice time. His kids were absolutely wonderful, so well behaved and polite. His little girl, Anna, asked me about the sock monkeys I make, so I made one for her and finished it last night, I just hope I get to see her again soon so I can give it to her. De-tasseling season is among us, Paul is all ready to start tomorrow morning, however he wanted two more pair of long shorts to wear. I made a basic gray pair which he thought was fine. Then I decided to be a little ornery and bought fabric with ears of corn on it. I made the shorts and handed them to him and got a huge sigh in return with "You know I HATE corn" I just smiled and said "Yep, and you need a little humor in your day."

I guess he could always wear the shorts to a Nebraska Cornhuskers game.

Sock Monkey's Summer Vacation 2010

Joshua and I are planning a much needed vacation. We've invited Mom, Dad and Paul to join us.

One of our first stops was Phantom Fireworks, wow do they have a big inventory. We didn't buy fireworks, but we found some really cool electronic launchers.

Sock Monkey at White Castle

I saw a White Castle from the road, when I pointed it out, Mom said we had to stop there, she hadn't been to a White Castle for many years. We get the frozen kind from the grocery store, but it's just not the same as a freshly made White Castle.

Ahhh....nice refreshing iced tea. It was HOT on our vacation.

Going Up!

The arch is casting a shadow on the Mississippi River. Mom and Dad said the last time they were here in 1993 the area had flooded, almost everything you see in this picture was under water. At the peak of the flood the river was 30 feet above normal.

Here's a picture of Mom, Paul and me looking out the window of the arch. It was really hot that day too, mom was all sweaty and icky.

We stopped in Lexington Kentucky and had lunch with Mom's friend Marcia.

Katie recently found out she's going to be a mommy, I tried to listen for the baby, but it's still pretty small. Although I did hear Katie's tummy growling, boy was she hungry!

After Wilmington, we went to the Outer Banks. Here I am on Cedar Island looking for the ferry boat that will take us to Ocracoke Island.

We went all the way up to Kitty Hawk, here I am sitting with Orville Wright. Weeeeeeee!

After the outer banks, we drove back through North Carolina and Kentucky. We stopped at Cumberland Falls to see the moonbow, it only happens during a full moon, so we planned ahead and made sure we were there at the right time. Oh, this is our cabin.

There were signs that black bears were in the area, I sat outside and looked for one, but no luck.

Here is the waterfall, this is where you can see the moonbow. Mom and Dad took pictures of it at about 2:00 in the morning, I was already asleep. Dad is going to get them posted someday, he's just been too busy lately.

One of our last stops was Mammoth Cave, we took a 2 hour tour that had over 500 stairs. It was pretty cool, but after the tour I was ready for a nap. When I woke up, we were driving back to Nebraska. Mom said our vacation was almost over and it was time to go home. I didn't mind, I was glad to be back in my own bed. ***Home Sweet Home***

Life will be changing

We returned from our 2 week vacation the other day. I'll be posting photos soon, but need to finish catching up with sock monkey orders first. Once I'm caught up with monkeys and blogging, I'll be moving on to sewing baby clothes, and possibly maternity clothes. I just found out I'm going to be a grandma in January. Everyone around here is excited. The only sad part is my daughter and her hubby live on the east coast and we are in Nebraska ***sigh*** but, we'll find a way to keep up with watching our grand-baby grow and our daughter and son-in-law grow into parenthood. "Thank you Dear Lord for our many blessings."

The fastest turn around time so far! I think I've mentioned it usually takes about 8 hours to make a sock monkey. It depends on a few things, like how tired and sore my hands get and also how many breaks I take to do laundry, run errands...etc.... I've not sat down once to complete a monkey from beginning to end at one time, I'm not even sure I could do that. But this is probably the closest I've come. He was started and completed in one day, I would've gotten him done quicker than I did, but I guess I fell asleep with a monkey on my lap and snoozed for a solid 2 hours. Wooops! Well, I still got him done and he will be shipped today when I get off work. I feel pretty confident he'll make it to Utah before the requested deadline.

But no, I just said "sure" only to find out her birthday was the very next day! UGH....when will I learn? Husker Card Table

I found some purchase by the yard Husker vinyl at Hancock Fabrics. I knew that the card table my boys do their homework on needed to be recovered, and thought this would be the way to go. Our card table had dark brown legs with a dark brownish green top (it wasn't exactly attractive), but those were the colors my Father-in-Law chose back in the 70's. The old vinyl was torn in a few places and the legs were pretty beat up. DH (Dear Hubby) found some hardware to make the legs sturdy and then we found some black spray paint. We pulled the old top off and spray painted the legs/frame. I wasn't planning to pull the old cover off, I thought I'd just cover over it. But after looking at the underside of the table, I decided it all had to go. So I pulled the old off, removed all the extra staples that were left behind and started the recovering process. I believe the hardest part of recovering was getting the corners pulled tight and stapled. Once that was done, I went back over all the staples with a hammer, just to make sure they were in tight enough. Once the frame was dry, I attached the top, flipped it over, and to my surprise, was very happy with the finished product.

Howdy Campers!
Mom and Dad wanted to buy a new camper, the old one was just too much work for them. Mom said they are getting too old to set it up and tear down camp every time they go out. She also said they needed more storage space, so after lots of thinking, mom and dad bought a used camper. It's perdy....
Dad's car isn't ready to pull it yet, so the nice man we bought it from delivered it to our house. He showed us all the things inside and out and how they worked. After he and his family left, it was MY turn to take the grand tour. It is really nice, Mom and dad said when Paul and Bryan aren't camping with us, I get one of the beds all to myself, unless of course Buddy and Missy, those two feisty canine's decide to sleep with me. I haven't camped yet, so I practiced while the camper was in the driveway, so I'd know what to expect. I posed a few times for dad.

I wonder if I can find Curious George on one of these stations?

You may remember a while back I was helping my mom with all the socks that were to become my brothers and sisters. Well, mom and I have been hard at work sewing and stuffing socks to make more SOCK MONKEYS!!! Sorry, I get a little excited. I've actually helped mom take some pictures too, she had me sit in the middle of all the "new" monkeys and had me show them the ropes on how to sit still for photos. So, here ya go....more pictures of SOCK MONKEYS!!! Ooops there I go again.

My sweet niece is expecting her first baby, it is so exciting, she and her dear hubby will be excellent parents. I wanted to make a baby blanket for her little guy so purchased some fabric from a friend in Idaho, learned how to do mitered corners from another blog and embroidered his name on the blanket. To compete the project I also made him a sock monkey. I cross stitched the eyes and sewed them on, but I'm not real thrilled with the outcome, my DH says they look fine, so I'm going to take his word for it. I guess some baby monkeys do kind of have strange looking eyes, so I guess they'll do. Here are the results!

Husker Wallet

I'm not sure about most women, but I have a heck of a time finding a wallet that meets my needs. I decided to make my own wallet, but still being somewhat new to sewing, wanted to find a pattern. That proved to be just as difficult as finding a store bought wallet. So with no pattern in hand, I would have to come up with my own. Easier said than done! Some of the things I wanted were a zippered pouch to stuff currency and coins in, a spot for my checkbook, and an area to hold my bank cards, ID and my "Never leave home without it," Starbucks card (and you thought I was going to say American Express.) Here is my finished product, I might try to make another one with some spring or summer fabric, or maybe sock monkey fabric.

Top section holds a check book, middle section is the zippered pouch, bottom section holds bank cards and photo ID.

Whew, what a time I had with dad, there is so much to tell you, but with my current jet lag I'll tell you some now and continue later. Dad helped me journal the trip so I can remember everything I did. Boy am I tired, Vegas is a really wild place, it gives a whole new meaning to "It's a jungle out there" and believe me, I've been in many jungles.
The first picture is of me riding to Omaha in dad's car. I was a good monkey and buckled up. Dad and I drove with the windows down so we could feel the wind in our hair, wow, that was so cool. It was great, we were jamming to some loud tunes on the radio, I was singing on the top of my lungs to Jungle Love and The Lion Sleeps Tonight, and one of my favorites "Hey, Hey We're The Monkeys."

At the airport I got to sit on the window ledge to get a better look at the plane. I watched the people getting off and on the flights before ours. This was my first trip on a plane, I wasn't nervous at all, it was exciting. Dad said he only gets nervous when the weather is bad and he's on too small of a plane to fly above the storm. He said that happened to him and mom when they were on their honeymoon in California. Mom wasn't scared so helped dad stay calm, it's so sweet how they take care of each other.

When we boarded the plane, dad and I took our seats, the lady in the front was talking to us about our seat being a flotation device, I asked dad why we would need that since we're flying to the desert.

Once we were up in the air, I got to take off my seat belt and look out my window. Being a bit on the short side, I couldn't see very clearly unless I stood up. Flying so high is really neato, I saw the mountains in Denver and I saw farms, and small towns and really big cities.

After we landed, the pilot came back to talk to dad, I couldn't really clearly hear what they were saying, but I thought I heard the pilot call me a "handsome young primate" man, he must have really thought I was something, he invited me up to the cockpit and said I could look at the controls, he let dad tag along too, I guess so he could take pictures of me.

I chatted with the pilot, you know, guy stuff, he must have been impressed with me, he asked me to sit in the co-pilots chair, I'm thinking he might just want me to be his new co-pilot.

I even got to handle the controls...."Jonah to Air Traffic Control, we are ready for take-off".

After I was done being schmoozed by the pilot, we had a group photo taken. As you can see, they were all thrilled to be having their picture taken with me. I'm guessing they all went home and told their friends and family that they met an exceptionally sweet and handsome sock monkey.

Well, I have plenty more to write about, but I'm going to go have a snack and take a nap

I received a call last night from Greg, he said after the plane landed, he took some pictures of Jonah wearing his seat belt. When the pilot saw what he was doing Greg explained that I have a blog and that I will be posting stories about the sock monkey. The pilot thought that was cool and invited them to the cock-pit, so Greg took pictures of Jonah in the cock-pit and also with the pilot and crew. I have a feeling I'll be very busy when they get back, I can't wait to see the photos.

Charm Bracelet

This is the charm bracelet I made for my dear friend Karma. The beading wire is 49 strand sterling silver wire, the beads are all Swarovski crystal, the "Karma" and awareness charms are both sterling silver. The cross charm I've had for a few years, I don't remember if it sterling silver or silver coated. There are two more split rings so Karma can add two more charms. The clasp is a magnetic star which makes it so much easier to put on and take off, especially if you don't have help.

Hi everyone, I'm borrowing mom's computer to tell you what happened at our house. Dad's been taking Bryan to Dubuque so he can get ready for drum corps. While Bryan is practicing, dad hangs around town. He brought me and mom a surprise the last time he came home. Can you guess what it is? Or maybe I should say, can you guess who they are? I'm so excited....I can hardly contain myself! My dad brought my new brothers and sisters home! WOO HOO...... Mom said I'll have to be patient before I can play with them. She said sock monkeys need time to develop, kind of like babies when they're in mommies tummies. Gosh, I don't want to wait too long. I tried to help mom with the socks, here's a picture of me getting ready to pick some up and carry them into mom's room, so she can help them develop.

I carried a few in at a time, but then got tired of walking back and forth, so, I picked up a big bunch of socks, but there was a problem, I slipped on the hardwood floor and the socks went flying everywhere, luckily they cushioned my fall.

How am I going to explain this mess to mom, she did ask me to be careful, and said this is "precious cargo", at least I don't think there was any damage done. I took the time to look closer at each sock, that took a long time.

Looking at that many socks gets BORING, I accidentally started to daydream....I imagined myself living on a banana plantation....Oh how glorious that would be, all the bananas I can eat, and there were many kinds too. Banana splits, chocolate covered bananas, Bananas Foster, banana cream pie and bananas on a stick!

Then I heard "Jonah, what are you doing, are you okay", I quickly said, yes mom, I'm fine as I rolled over and glanced at the socks. Hmmmm.....I thought to myself, if just taking these socks to my mom has become this great of an adventure, I REALLY can't wait until they are my brothers and sisters. We are going to have lots of adventures together. Oh how I love my sock family......

Marcilio Sock Monkey has a Girlfriend

Boy oh boy! Marcilio talked Greg into letting him go out the other night, against my better judgement. I tried to tell Greg that Marcilio shouldn't be going out by himself yet, but Greg seemed to think he could handle himself. Sure enough, Marcilio came home smelling like a banana daiquiri and had a girl with him. I threw my hands up in the air and said "I give up" as I stomped out of the room. I'm so tired of having these guys ignore me. After giving myself a few minutes to calm down, I went back into the living room to meet Marcilio's friend. He introduced Murial to us, I have to admit she's cute, but only time will tell if she's a "good monkey" I don't want some little hussy hanging around my boys. Marcilio said they were going to go downstairs to play some Donkey Kong, it's his favorite game, I said that's fine, however, I pulled him aside and gave him some rules. No closed doors and the lights stay turned on, I didn't want any monkey business going on down there. Marcilio looked at me with his boyish grin and said, "monkey business.....Is there any other kind?"

Jonah LOVES his Gourami fish, as you can see, he is mesmerized by both of them. When it's warmer outside Jonah wants me to take a picture of him and his pond in the back yard. He has Shubunkin Goldfish in his outside pond. Last summer, Jonah jumped into the pond to swim with his fish. Oh what a mess he was after that. He needed a bath and had to dry out in the sun. I don't think he'll be doing that again, he doesn't like taking baths, he says the bubbles tickle his nose.

Many years ago, one of my sons was being his goofy self, and playing on the floor acting like a walrus, although the sounds he was making was more like a monkey. Hence, the walrus-monkey was born. This past Christmas while the family was together, and we asked CJ (now 21) to do his impression of the walrus-monkey. I mailed Aunt Linda's monkeys to her, hopefully she'll get them in the next day or two, sure hope she likes them. A few people I work with would like to purchase sock monkeys from me, but I'm not sure what to charge. I'm thinking between $15.00 and $25.00 depending on the cost of the socks and the size of the monkey. Have any of you seen the new commercial on t.v. with the sock monkey driving the car? I laughed so hard when the monkey was getting a "mom" tattoo, I might have to just try to add that to one of my future monkeys. I'm thinking about trying to make other animals but need to catch up on some of my other projects first.

My 21 year old son, CJ, has been a fan of monkeys since he was a little boy. Last week we sat down and made a sock monkey together. His is the one with one eye and ear larger than the other, he did this by choice because when he signs his name on one of his designs, he draws a monkey face with one eye and ear larger than the other. It's quite cute!
I have come to realize how popular sock monkeys are again. I did a Google search looking for a fez pattern, what I found was many sites with lots of fun sock monkeys. So, after I finished CJ's monkey, I decided to make the above black, white and pink striped monkey for Katie. She received it a few days ago and called saying she loves it. I have decided to make her "holiday" monkeys. I have completed the Valentines Day and St Patrick's Day monkeys and have posted them above. I'll have to find some spring/Easter socks soon and start on an Easter monkey, although a bunny is tempting too. I'll then have to look for birthday socks, 4th of July socks...etc..... I would really like to find socks with the Air Force emblem on them, that would be so cool! Kate will be deploying to the desert again this year, so I hope to find some tan camouflage socks. If anyone knows where I can find some of these specialized socks, please leave me a comment.

I finally had the chance to sit and actually read some of my favorite blogs, and Christine's has always been one of the first I go to. When I got to her Thursday Thunks from January 14th, I had to laugh when I read the part about Mr. Potato head. It was this past fall when I used some Mr. Potato Head parts to give two of our garden squash some personality.
